MASTHEADS

To the left is an image of many different mast heads all from well known music magazines and from what you can see it is easy to see why they are so known worldwide - each has their own look however they all have quite a lot in common - they are all big and bold, the writing is quite simple and that way it makes a statement (not like really curly letters etc). In addition they all have quite short and sharp names, nothing too long! Also it is easy to spot them from a far or when they are displayed in a shop as the mast heads are all on the first left!!

To the right here is ID Magazine which isn't exactly a music magazine however it is all about youth culture and incorporates music, fashion and art! They have a very distinctive masthead which is famous worldwide as if you look at it side ways it looks like a face winking which translates onto their cover image which always has someone winking or covering one eye on the front! They have made their masthead perfectly represent what they are all about along with it being very bold, simple and eye catching. Here it has been colour blocked which stands out great against the black background of the image in addition as the masthead is on the first left it is easy to see the famous i when it is diplayed in the shop!

Eventhough these mastheads to the left aren't music magazines they are all from famous magazines and again it is clear to see that they all look somewhat the same however they also look different - by this I mean they all seem to use very simple, bold, fonts and usually just one colour which again is bold and not too harsh on the eye. So overall I feel that it is much better to have a masthead that is completely simple, nothing over powering and ofcourse has to be clear and catch the eye of the reader!!

This magazine here to the right is a festival magazine which fits in perfectly as I am doing a festival magazine for my own final piece. The masthead of this magazine is big and covers one quarter of the whole magazine! In addition it is simple but bold and eye catching and ofcourse the most important part is that it is clear for us as a reader to see!! As it is a festival magazine it can be much more 'arty'/wacky than commercial magazines because of its type of target audience therefore their masthead involves lots of rainbow looking colour all over it but the actual outline of the words are black and white so we can still see them! I also like the effect of the 3D look to the words it is as if they bounce of the page! I need to think about this for my own magazine because I want it to scream festival but also still be professional looking!!
