MY PRELIMINARY TASK

For my preliminary task I was given a brief to create a school magazine on any genre I liked and had to create a front cover and contents page as my final outcome. To build up to my final outcome I literally started straight from the beginning - brain storming (mindmapping) ideas for genres of the magazine, then when I chose the idea to create a school fashion magazine I researched magz with the same genre - Vogue, ID and Love Magazine to study what goes on the cover of top fashion magazines. I then started looking at mastheads (title fonts) and typography from magazines, analysing what looks good, why I liked them etc which then lead to me studying the mastheads of magazines covers. Next I went onto the stage of creating my own masthead, I used Adobe Illustrator to make my own font and play around with the fonts that were there, I came up with a few different ideas and coloujr combinations but then ended up narrowing it down to one design I was happy about!

After all of that I looked at magazine target grounds - for magazines like ID, Vogue etc as they are fashion magazines like my theme - then I had to think about my own target group - using pictures and writing to explain my vision. Eventually I felt like I was at the point where I knew exactly what I wanted for my magazine and where I wanted to take it so I did a mock up of the front cover along with a mood board and photo inspiration for my front cover shoot. The next step was creating my own primary reasearch to create my magazine - the photoshoot - I already had the idea of the image so I got two of my friends to be my modelled, dressed them up and chose a location, I took lots of images which meant I would have options to choose from. I edited the images and played around with making them the cover and then decided upon one image that I thought was the most striking and best image and used Adobe In Design to create my magazine cover, using Adobe Photoshop for my photograph and Adobe Illustrator for my masthead however I had to transfer all the elements onto In Design which was easy enough. When I was happy with the photograph and masthead positioning I had to add on articles and the cover story which to be honest was hard to think about what to write. After finishing with my cover I moved onto the contents page which in my opinion was harder than the front cover because I had to come up with articles.

When I completed everything I then had to present it to the class. To be honest I am happy with my final outcome and doing the preliminary task has helped me a lot to know what to research for my final music magazine task now because I know what to expect and what is expected out of me! Above is the scanned images from my sketchbook that I used as my portfolio containing everything I did from research to development to the final magazine!
